When More Toys Create Less Play

Children become overwhelmed just like adults.

When every bin is overflowing...

When nothing has a home...

When choices are endless...

They don't play more.

They play less.

A child walks into a room with hundreds of toys...

Looks around...

Says, "I'm bored."

Five minutes later they're playing with:

a cardboard box
couch cushions
a mixing bowl
the dog's leash
a piece of paper

Parent's think,

"How are they bored?"

The problem isn't imagination.

It's decision fatigue.

Adults:

Too many clothes.

Too many dishes.

Too many decorations.

Too many abandoned hobbies.

Kids?

Too many toys.

The same principle applies.

More stuff = more decisions.

More decisions = more overwhelm.

I am not suggesting you become a minimalist and throw out all your children's toys.

...But I am suggesting that you become more intentional with the toys they have access to and the ones you or others purchase for them.

TIPS FOR TOY ORGANIZATION & STORAGE

ROTATE TOYS

This does not work for everybody. Too often I hear that parents tried to implement a toy rotation and forgot they existed. If this is a system that would work for your household, it's a wonderful way to bring back the novelty of their toys every so often .

STORE LIKE WITH LIKE

Building toys with building toys. Pretend play and costumes together. Art supplies and paper stored in the same cabinet. Books with books.

This makes it easy to find what you're looking for and easy to clean up before moving on.

LEAVE ROOM TO PLAY

Kids don't just need toys. They need floor space. Table space. Creative space. Avoid filling their space with so many things that they don't actually have enough room to use them.

Your goal isn't to own the fewest toys.

It's to create a room where your child can easily choose something, enjoy it, and put it away when they're finished.

Sometimes adding another toy feels like giving them more.

But often, giving them a little more space instead can be the best gift of all.
